In Chiavari, the large sandy beach in the center of the town offers the perfect place for a relaxing day at the beach. Chiavari is known for having given birth to the fathers of Nino Bixio, Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the latter of whom became Chiavari due to his family origins. It is an important point of reference for the valleys of the Chiavari hinterland. In addition to the clean sea, there are sandy and partly pebble beaches; it has both a tourist and a commercial port. To get to the port, there is a long and panoramic promenade that runs along the coast of the Ligurian Sea. Chiavari has a wonderful historical center called "Carugio"; there are delicious bakeries and pizza service as well as typical Ligurian food stores, clothes and all sorts of things. Chiavari can be reached via the A7 highway or by train.

Location

Chiavari is located directly on the sea with a sandy beach and (from the Latin key or valley key) belongs to the province of Genoa and is not only a popular vacation resort in its own right. It is also a great starting point for excursions to the nearby Cinque Terre or Portofino.

Chiavari's extensive bathing beach is known above all for its good water quality. The town's special location, surrounded by fertile, lush green hills, also makes its mountainous hinterland a worthwhile destination for nature lovers.

Colorful sea of houses, historic palaces The brightly colored facades in Chiavari's alleyways are reminiscent of the picture-book world of the Cinque Terre. However, the bishop's residence also has some impressive monumental buildings to offer, such as the Palazzo di Giustizia or the Palazzo Rocca. In addition, the remains of a medieval castle, the Castello di Chiavari, are still preserved in Chiavari today.

The decorative arcades in the old town are a special feature, for example in Via Martiri della Liberazione and at Palazzo Dei Portici Neri. The religious buildings are also worth seeing. The Cathedral di Nostra Signora dell'Orto was built in the 17th century on the exact spot where a Marian apparition is said to have taken place in 1610. The Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Grazie is particularly famous for its artistic frescoes, which depict the Last Judgement, among other things. But Chiavari's atmospheric squares, such as Piazza Fenice or Piazza delle Carrozze, also attract many visitors. Art and handicrafts Those interested in culture can visit the archaeological museum and the collection of paintings in Palazzo Rocca in Chiavari. However, the city also has a long tradition of arts and crafts. Chiavari is known for its bobbin lace and for the traditional Campanino or Chiavari chairs, which were exported throughout Europe, especially in the 19th century, and were used in particular to furnish castles and churches. The exclusive seating furniture, which combines stability with low weight, is still produced today. Much copied but never equaled, the Chiavari chair consists of an elegantly curved wooden frame and a hand-woven seat made of willow bark or rattan.

In and around Chiavari, many small stores still sell traditional handicrafts. Visitors will also find numerous other stores and cafés in the archways of the old town.
